Speak Kindly

“If speaking kindly to plants helps them grow, imagine what speaking kindly to humans can do.”

I saw this sign last week while on vacation. I’ve seen the saying before, but the sign was so cute I stopped to snap a photo anyway. It’s great food for thought, isn’t it?? You never know when a well-timed kind word can change someone's life.

I reminds me of this quote I read to my yoga classes every now and then:

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

-Leo Buscaglia

YES. Did you catch that last little bit?

"...all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

Can you recall a certain comment, compliment, or encouragement someone gave you right when you needed it? Or a time when someone’s words gave you confidence, hope, cheered your day, or even changed your life? I certainly can. Those moments CAN turn a life around.

On the flip side, I’m sure we can all easily recall thoughtless comments that stung us, hurt us, or even chipped away at our confidence.

Admittedly, I have a lot of pet peeves. However, one of my biggest is when people rationa
lize their comments under the banner of: "I tell it like it is." Please. We all have the power to be honest AND kind at the same time. Sliding a hurtful or inappropriate comment in under the guise of "honesty" is not kind at all. In yoga, we have a word that applies to this. Ahimsa. It means non-violence or "do no harm", and to treat every living thing with kindness. It's a big, but simple concept.

Words are important. What if we all gave a little more thought to our words? I certainly don’t have it all figured out, but I’m trying to speak more words of love. In one of her lectures in (her audiobook) Inspired Teachings On A Course in Miracles, the fabulous Marianne Williamson says that you can decide to live in love and be a loving and beneficent presence in others’ lives.

The time is always right to be kind. Try to work it in to your day today. Here are three easy ways to build people up instead of knocking them down:
•Speak kindly.
•Think before you speak. Ask yourself if your comment is necessary and/or helpful.
•Give more sincere compliments.

Again, you never know when a well-timed kind word can change someone's life.

Love & Light.
